Gleanings for December 6
Jesus the Prophet of the Greater Covenant
Deuteronomy 18: 15, 17, 18: NKJV “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst from you brothers, Him you shall hear.”
“And the Lord said to me (that was to Moses): What they have spoken is good. I
will raise up for them a Prophet
like you from among their brothers and will
put My words in
His mouth and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.”
“To the religious Jews of Jesus’ time, no one was greater than Moses. Through Moses God had given the Law; he was the person God used to transmit their whole religious system.
“But they were also aware that God said He would send another Prophet like Moses.
“When the Pharisees inquired of John the Baptist whether he was ‘the Prophet’ they were thinking about that passage in Deuteronomy.
“The
questions they asked John are found in the Gospel of John
Since John could not answer “yes” to any
of those questions; the Pharisees asked him: ‘then who ARE you?’ And his answer was:
Verse 1: 23: “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: make straight the way of the Lord.”
“As Moses brought the Old Covenant, so Jesus came to bring the New Covenant. John says in John 1: 17: “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
“The writer of Hebrews tells us that Christ became the Mediator of a better covenant, Jesus, as the Prophet, came to fulfill the requirements of the Old Covenant so that a New Covenant could be established between God and mankind.”
Hebrews
8: 6: “But now He (Jesus) has
obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch
as He is also MEDIATOR of a better covenant which was established on better promises.”
The word “mediator” means: “a go-between, umpire, reconciler, and arbitrator, intermediary.
Galatians 3: 19 bring us this truth: “The law was added because of
transgressions, till the SEED (Who
is Jesus) should come in whom the
promise was made and it was appointed
through angels by the hand of a mediator.”
In this passage, “mediator” refers to Moses but in most passages it speaks
of Jesus accomplishing salvation for us by coming to earth.
The reason we bring these scriptures which “foretell” of His coming, is: They confirm the reliability of God’s Word. There are still many more references to that truth and we will continue to bring them to you.
Keep this thought with you: THE JOY OF THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH!!!
